If you are thinking about a data analytics career in Kolkata, you have probably heard two opposite claims. One says the city is full of new analytics jobs. The other says every good data job is in Bengaluru or Hyderabad. Neither is quite right.
To give you a clearer picture, we looked at 60 current data analyst job listings for Kolkata, salary data from four salary websites and recent industry reports, all checked on 15 October 2026. This guide explains what we found, which skills employers ask for, what freshers can realistically expect and how to take your first practical steps.
The short answer: Kolkata is an emerging, secondary market for analytics work, not yet a major hub like Bengaluru. There are real openings in consulting, IT services, finance, pharma, manufacturing and logistics, but most ask for at least one or two years of experience. Freshers who learn Excel, SQL and Power BI and build a small portfolio have a realistic way in, often through internships, MIS or reporting roles.
Is Kolkata really becoming a data analytics hub?
Partly. The evidence points to growth, but from a smaller base than the big tech cities.
What supports the idea
- Companies are looking beyond the metros. A June 2026 JLL report on global capability centres names Kolkata among the smaller cities that offer 10 to 35% lower living costs than the major metros. Global capability centres are offices that large companies set up in India to run their own technology, finance and analytics work.
- New digital infrastructure. CtrlS opened a data centre at Bengal Silicon Valley in New Town in August 2025, and other operators have announced projects in the same area. Data centres do not employ many analysts directly, but they show that companies are investing in the region’s digital infrastructure.
- A visible volume of jobs. On 15 October 2026, Naukri listed 743 data analyst vacancies for Kolkata. In our sample, employers ranged from PwC’s service delivery center, Grant Thornton, Accenture, TCS and Genpact to pharma, FMCG and manufacturing companies.
What tempers it
- The same JLL report says more than 90% of global capability centre activity is still in the largest cities, such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai and Delhi NCR.
- We could not find current official figures for IT or analytics employment in West Bengal, so no one can say exactly how fast analytics hiring in Kolkata is growing.
- In our sample, 16 of the 60 listings named Kolkata as one of seven cities. These are pan-India postings, not roles based only in Kolkata.
Our reading: Kolkata is a real and growing option for an analytics career, especially for people who want to build one without leaving the city. It is not yet a place where analytics jobs are easy to find, so preparation matters.
What does a data analyst actually do?
A data analyst turns raw data into answers a business can act on. A typical week might include pulling sales figures from a database, cleaning duplicate or missing entries, finding out why one region sold less than another, and presenting the result in a dashboard or report.
In Kolkata listings, this work appears under several job titles. Look beyond “Data Analyst” and also search for:
- MIS Executive or MIS Analyst: preparing regular management reports, often in Excel.
- Business Analyst: connecting business needs with data, often in IT services or consulting.
- Reporting or BI Analyst: building dashboards in Power BI or Tableau.
- Data Operations or Data Verification Analyst: checking and maintaining data quality.
Which industries in Kolkata need analytics skills?
The listings we reviewed came from a wider range of industries than many students expect. The table below shows the industries we saw and the kind of analytics work each one typically involves.

| Industry | Employers seen in our Kolkata sample (15 Oct 2026) | Typical analytics work in this industry |
|---|---|---|
| Consulting and professional services | PwC Service Delivery Center, Grant Thornton | Data modelling, CRM and HR data, finance and audit data |
| IT services and business process management | TCS, Accenture, Genpact | Power BI reporting, data management, client analytics |
| Banking, finance and insurance | A gold-loan NBFC, a financial data analyst role at an IT-enabled services firm, an insurance data role | MIS reports, financial statement analysis, data mapping |
| Pharma and healthcare | Mendine Pharmaceuticals, a pharma omnichannel analytics role, a US healthcare provider-data role | Sales performance, compliance data, provider records |
| FMCG and manufacturing | Rollick Ice Cream, Jainco Transmission, Spectrum Filtration | Sales and ERP data, Excel and Power BI reporting |
| Logistics and supply chain | UPS Supply Chain Solutions, Portcast | Operations data, delivery and shipment tracking |
These employers come from one sample of listings on one day. The table shows where analytics skills are being used, not a complete list of who is hiring.
What current job listings reveal about employer requirements
We reviewed the first three pages of Naukri’s data analyst listings for Kolkata on 15 October 2026, which gave us 60 unique listings. For each one, we counted the key skills tagged on the listing.

| Skill or tool | Listings that tagged it (out of 60) |
|---|---|
| Excel (including VLOOKUP, pivot tables, macros) | 13 |
| SQL and databases | 13 |
| Power BI | 13 |
| Python | 11 |
| AI or machine learning terms | 9 |
| Statistics | 7 |
| MIS and reporting | 7 |
| Tableau | 3 |
Three things stood out:
- Excel, SQL and Power BI form the core. They were the most frequently tagged skills, which makes them the safest starting point.
- Python is close behind. It appeared in 11 listings, in both junior and senior roles.
- Experience matters. Only 4 of the 60 listings accepted candidates with no experience, and 10 more started at one year. The other listings asked for two years or more, apart from two unpaid internships and one walk-in role that did not state experience.
About this sample: Naukri shows a maximum of eight key-skill tags on each listing, so these counts are lower than the skills mentioned in full job descriptions. It is a snapshot of one job site on one day, not a measure of the whole Kolkata job market.
Can a fresher start a data analytics career in Kolkata?
Yes, but expect fewer openings and more competition at entry level. Even Naukri’s “fresher” page for Kolkata showed many listings asking for two years or more when we checked. These routes tend to work better for freshers:
- Internships. Paid internships give you experience that counts. Be cautious with unpaid ones; two in our sample were unpaid.
- MIS and reporting roles. These Excel-heavy jobs are a common first step, and they build the reporting habits analysts need.
- Data operations and verification roles. These focus on data quality and can lead to analyst work.
- Roles that ask for 0 to 2 years of experience. Apply even if you do not meet every listed skill, as long as you match the core ones.
Remote roles exist, but only one listing in our sample was fully remote, so do not rely on them as your main plan.
Data analyst salary in Kolkata: what the data says
Salary is where the internet disagrees most. Four salary websites gave four different pictures for Kolkata when we checked:
| Source | What it shows for Kolkata | Based on | Last updated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payscale | Average base pay ₹5,02,920 a year. Under 1 year of experience: average total pay ₹4,11,157 | 63 salary profiles (29 at entry level) | 9 June 2026 |
| AmbitionBox | Typical range ₹6.5 to ₹7.2 lakh a year for 1 to 5 years of experience; ₹5.4 to ₹6 lakh for 1 to 3 years | About 2,500 salaries | 14 October 2026 |
| Glassdoor | Base pay ₹4 lakh to ₹8 lakh a year; average base pay ₹5 lakh | Not stated on the page | Viewed 15 October 2026 |
| Indeed | Average ₹3,25,053 a year | 18 salaries from job postings | 20 October 2023 (old data) |
| Naukri listings in our sample | Examples: ₹2.5 to ₹4 lakh (1 to 5 years, manufacturer); ₹4 to ₹6 lakh (3 to 5 years, FMCG); ₹5.5 to ₹8.5 lakh (1 to 6 years, finance role at an IT-enabled services firm) | 14 of 60 listings showed a salary | 15 October 2026 |
The figures differ because each site uses different data. Some rely on salaries that employees report themselves, some use job postings, and samples range from 18 salaries to about 2,500. Indeed’s figure was last updated in 2023.
What this means for a fresher: the only direct entry-level figure we found, Payscale’s ₹4.11 lakh average for less than one year of experience, comes from just 29 salaries. Treat any single “fresher salary” number with caution, plan around the lower end of the ranges and ask employers about the pay range during interviews.
Skills beginners should learn first
Based on the listings above, focus on these skills in roughly this order:
- Excel: formulas, lookups, pivot tables and charts.
- SQL: selecting, filtering, joining and summarising data.
- Power BI: cleaning data, building models and creating dashboards. Microsoft’s PL-300 exam guide is a free, detailed list of what Power BI analysts are expected to do.
- Basic statistics: averages, spread, distributions and correlation.
- Python: useful once you are comfortable with the first four, especially for larger datasets.
- Communication: explaining what the data means in plain language. Some listings in our sample tagged communication skills.
For a more detailed explanation of each tool, read our guide to data analytics courses in Kolkata for beginners.
A practical data analytics learning roadmap

- Spreadsheet skills: practise on real datasets, not only tutorials.
- Basic statistics: learn it alongside spreadsheets, using your own data.
- SQL: practise with free online databases or sample data.
- Data cleaning and analysis: take messy data and make it usable.
- Power BI or Tableau: build two or three dashboards.
- Python, if your target roles ask for it: start with Pandas for cleaning and analysis.
- Portfolio projects: complete two or three projects from start to finish.
- Job applications and interviews: tailor your CV to each listing and practise explaining your projects.
Timelines vary. Google says many learners finish its Data Analytics Certificate in three to six months at under 10 hours a week. Your pace will depend on your background and the time you can give each week.
How freshers can build a project portfolio
A portfolio shows employers what you can do, which matters when most listings ask for experience you do not have yet. Aim for two or three complete projects, each answering a clear business question.
- A sales dashboard: use a public retail dataset to build a Power BI dashboard showing sales by month, region and product.
- A monthly MIS report: create an Excel report with pivot tables and charts, similar to what MIS roles ask for.
- A SQL analysis: load a public dataset, for example from India’s Open Government Data Platform, and answer five business questions with SQL queries.
- A data cleaning project: take a messy dataset and document each cleaning step in Excel or Python.
For each project, write a short summary covering the question, the data, your method and what you found. Share the work on GitHub or LinkedIn so recruiters can see it.
How to choose your learning path
There is no single best way to learn. Each approach has trade-offs:

| Factor | Self-study | Structured online course | Classroom training |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lowest; many resources are free | Medium | Usually the highest |
| Flexibility | Highest; study any time | Medium; live classes at set times, often with recordings | Lowest; fixed batch times and travel |
| Feedback on your work | Little, unless you find a mentor or community | Depends on mentor access and batch size | Most direct; face-to-face doubt solving |
| Project support | You choose and plan projects yourself | Usually guided projects with review | Usually guided projects, sometimes with lab time |
| Structure | You set the order and pace | Set syllabus and deadlines | Set syllabus, timetable and classmates |
| Often suits | Disciplined learners testing their interest | Students and professionals who need flexibility | Learners who want routine and in-person help |
Many Kolkata institutes, including DataMites, EME Academy, Karmick Institute and Webskitters Academy, publish their syllabus and fees online. Our comparison of data analytics courses in Kolkata sets out their published details side by side. Read how to choose a data analytics institute in Kolkata before you pay.
If you choose a course, ask these questions about career support:
- How many learners from the last batch of this course got analyst roles, out of how many who enrolled?
- What exactly does placement support include, and who is eligible?
- Will a trainer review my projects?
- Can I get the fee, refund and placement terms in writing?
Our article on choosing an institute for placements covers these questions in more detail.
Common mistakes beginners make
- Learning too many tools at once. Master Excel, SQL and one dashboard tool before adding more.
- Collecting certificates without projects. A certificate shows you completed a course. Projects show you can do the work.
- Ignoring MIS and reporting roles. They are a common and practical first step.
- Trusting salary headlines. Check the source, sample size and date before believing any figure.
- Searching only for “fresher” jobs. Many roles asking for 0 to 2 years are open to well-prepared freshers.
- Believing job guarantees. Ask for written terms before paying for any course that promises placement.
Frequently asked questions
Q.1 Is data analytics a good career option in Kolkata?
It can be, especially if you want to build a career without leaving the city. Kolkata has data analyst openings in consulting, IT services, finance, pharma, manufacturing and logistics, but it is a smaller market than Bengaluru or Hyderabad, and most listings ask for some experience. It suits people willing to build skills and a portfolio before applying.
Q.2 Can a fresher get a data analyst job in Kolkata?
Yes, but entry-level openings are fewer. In our sample of 60 Kolkata listings, 4 accepted candidates with no experience and 10 more started at one year. Internships, MIS and reporting roles, and data operations roles are common starting points for freshers.
Q.3 What is the salary of a data analyst in Kolkata?
It depends on experience and the source you check. On 15 October 2026, AmbitionBox showed ₹6.5 to ₹7.2 lakh a year for 1 to 5 years of experience, and Payscale showed an average of ₹4.11 lakh for less than one year, based on 29 salaries. Treat any single figure with caution.
Q.4 What skills are needed to become a data analyst?
Excel, SQL and Power BI were the most frequently tagged skills in our sample of Kolkata listings, followed by Python. Basic statistics, data cleaning and the ability to explain findings clearly are also important.
Q.5 What qualification do I need to become a data analyst?
There is no single required qualification. Internshala’s career guide says most employers prefer a bachelor’s degree in a quantitative or analytical subject, such as statistics, mathematics, economics or computer science, and that practical skills and projects are often just as important. Check the requirements in the listings you plan to apply for.
Q.6 Can AI replace a data analyst?
No one can say for certain how AI will change the role. Today, AI tools help analysts write formulas and queries faster, and AI terms appeared in 9 of the 60 Kolkata listings we reviewed. Employers still need people who understand the business question, check whether results are correct and explain them clearly.
Your next steps
A data analytics career in Kolkata is realistic if you prepare for the market as it is, not as advertisements describe it. Here is a simple plan:
- This week: read ten Kolkata data analyst listings on a job portal and note the skills that keep appearing.
- This month: start Excel and SQL practice and choose your learning path.
- Within three months: finish your first portfolio project and share it on LinkedIn or GitHub.
- After that: apply for internships and 0 to 2 year roles, and keep adding projects.
